The Super Bowl TV Spot for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom teases a brand new dinosaur, genetically designed for use by the military, which was first teased in Jurassic World. The sequel (directed by J.A. Bayona) is set four years after the previous movie, and sees Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to Isla Nublar to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption. Though the dinosaurs should really appreciate this heroic gesture, it’s more likely that they’ll continue to try and eat our heroes throughout the rescue process.

There’s more to the story than just a rescue mission, however. The new Super Bowl trailer for Fallen Kingdom shows Owen and Claire spying on the reveal of a new kind of dinosaur to a crowd of astonished onlookers. When Claire asks, “What is that thing?“, Lucy (Brooke Norbury) replies ominously, “They made it.”

The first man-made hybrid dinosaur was the Indominus Rex, which was introduced in Jurassic World. and combined the DNA of a variety of dinosaurs, as well as a few modern day animals. In that movie, Victor Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) explained that InGen was genetically engineering dinosaurs for military use – a more lucrative and stable revenue stream than a dinosaur theme park. “Imagine that one, a fraction of the size,” he said, referring to the Indominus Rex blueprint shown on a computer screen. “Deadly. Intelligent. Able to hide from the most advanced military technology. A living weapon unlike anything we’ve ever seen.” The hybrid in the Fallen Kingdom trailer appears to be a cross-breed of Jurassic World’s Indominus Rex, and velociraptor DNA (we see it tapping its claw on the ground in a throwback to the raptor in the first Jurassic Park movie).

Shortly after this reveal, Hoskins got mauled to death by one of Owen’s trained raptors, Delta. Unfortunately, InGen was able to transport their data and materials off the island by helicopter, along with geneticist Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong), meaning that the plans for weaponized dinosaurs would have survived. Moreover, following the destruction of Jurassic World, InGen’s need to find a new way of making money from genetically engineered dinosaurs would only have been compounded. It makes sense that we see it come to fruition in Jurassic World 2.

The Fallen Kingdom Super Bowl trailer also appears to show this lethal hybrid dinosaur invading Lucy’s bedroom and attacking her – before Owen calls on Blue (another of his trained raptors, who will be featured heavily in the movie) to intervene. How both Blue and a monstrous hybrid dinosaur end up in this setting (it doesn’t appear to be on Isla Nublar) remains to be seen, but it looks like the scene takes place some way into the movie, given that Blue has apparently been trained to attack on command.
