Marvel Studios announced the first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp arrives tomorrow. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was first launched by Marvel Studios in 2008 with Iron Man. Over the last decade, the MCU has expanded to include almost 20 films and a whole host of television series on ABC, Netflix, and Hulu – with even more upcoming. Celebrating their 10th anniversary year, Marvel Studios has three movies slated to hit theaters: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
With Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther set to debut in just a few weeks, and Infinity War hitting during Marvel Studios’ prime early May release window, the final MCU installment of 2018 will be Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. In the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, Paul Rudd will reprise his role as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, and he’ll team up with Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne, who will officially suit up as the Wasp. Now, since Marvel is wrapping up its promotional push for Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War has already debuted a trailer, the third MCU installment of 2018 will release its own teaser.
At tonight’s world premiere of Black Panther, the Marvel Studios Instagram account followed the film’s star, Chadwick Boseman, through the process of getting ready and walking the red carpet. In Marvel Studios’ final post to their Instagram story, a video panned to small, ant-sized poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp, then to a card reading: “Trailer tomorrow.”
The announcement that Marvel plans to release the Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer tomorrow is a little short notice but not unprecedented considering their marketing pushes for previous MCU movies. The trailer for Avengers: Infinity War didn’t arrive until after Thor: Ragnarok had been in theaters for some time, but that was likely due to Marvel wanting to avoid spoilers for Thor’s third solo outing (which leaves the God of Thunder missing one eye). However, trailers for Black Panther, Ragnarok, and Spider-Man: Homecoming all arrived well before their respective films hit theaters – which was why the long wait for the Infinity War trailer was an outlier.
Announcing the Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer at the Black Panther premiere, and shortly before Coogler’s MCU film hits theaters, is a way for Marvel Studios to carry over the hype among fans from one film to the next. While fans who have waited through 10 years of the MCU for Black Panther to make his solo debut may not appreciate Ant-Man and the Wasp sharing some of the spotlight, it’s certainly smart for Marvel to remind fans and casual moviegoers of their third movie in 2018. Up until now, most of the Marvel movie buzz has been understandably focused on Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. But, the first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp will no doubt get fans talking about Marvel Studios third release of the year once the teaser hits tomorrow.
